Eluxadoline (Viberzi®)

How it works:
Acts on specific opioid receptors targeting nerves in the intestinal tract. These nerves can sense pain and are responsible for bowel function.
Which symptoms it helps:
Overall IBS symptoms, abdominal pain, diarrhea.
How long it takes to see a benefit:
Within one week.

75-100mg tablet.
Special considerations or risks:
This treatment is contraindicated among individuals without a gallbladder or who have a history of sphincter of Oddi problems, pancreatitis, alcohol abuse, alcohol addiction, who drink more than 3 alcoholic drinks a day, or have severe liver problems.
Most common side effects:
: Constipation is most common. Severe abdominal pain from sphincter of Oddi spasm or acute pancreatitis is a rare but potentially serious side effect.

Recommendation:
ACG suggests eluxadoline for overall symptom improvement in IBS-D patients who do not have a listed contraindication.
