Low-FODMAP diet

How it works:
Reducing dietary FODMAPs (fermentable oligo-,di-,mono-saccharides and polyols) decreases osmotically active short chain sugars and carbs reaching the distal small bowel and colon where they are broken down by bacteria producing short chain fatty acids and gases which can trigger GI symptoms in certain IBS patients who tend to have a sensitive gut.
Which symptoms it helps:
Pain, bloating, flatulence, and to a lesser degree diarrhea.
How long it takes to see a benefit:
2-6 weeks.
Who may benefit:
Data suggests greatest benefit in non- constipated IBS patients, may benefit pain and bloating in IBS-C patients. This remains to be proven in clinical trials.
